I can not reproduce this problem in the latest cvs version.
no error / exception are triggered, even in the case of a restricted layer being
activated after session expired: the layer was simply not displayed.
the only problem I can see is that the interface is not refreshed to notify the
user that his session has expired.
But I dont see any easy way to handle this unless we carry some kind of extra
parameter via ajax which would let the php side know the user's interface is
"out-of-date" and would then trigger a template refresh.
In my opinion, too much work for too little benefit and since no more error are
reported, it would only be an improvement -> wontfix
