hi
for GDAL_DATA, maybe have a look at this http://lists.maptools.org/pipermail/ms4w-users/2005-April/000212.html

to use your data, simply set your layer's DATA parameter to point to the index file which should have been generated by gdaltindex.

  Subject: [Cartoweb-users] GDAL_DATA environment variable

  Hi!
  I need to define an index file with gdalindex for a lot of raster. I found the executable binary to download, but i have some doubts on the installation;
  Bin directory is put on my path (DATA for example). Then I have to define the GDAL_DATA environment variable to point to gdalwin32-1.6\data
  directory. What does it mean exactly. In DATA folder I have my raster, but how I can configure GDAL for those files?
  Sorry It's the first time I use GDALindex...
  Thanks
  Friz
