I just spoke with Paul and here is what we propose:

- Go ahead with the 2.4 release as planned.  
- I will do a small test on Monday to see if what we want to do is possible (as
well as how many widgets are affected).
- make a 2.4.1 branch
- make the chages to the MLT class
- update any widgets that are affected (with Joanne's help)
- release 2.4.1
