I dont think there is a built it phpmapscript tool for calculating area, 
least not that I found when I looked for this very thing before. Here is 
an interesting thread from the mapserver archives that talks about it:

In theory you should be able to take a series of vertices and do 
Stephan's code in PHP directly instead of adding it to your version of 
phpmapscript.
