Hi,

What is the error message?
Which version of chameleon and mapserver are you using?
I tested a truetype symbol and it worked fine.
Some suggestion:
Check if there's any error message that come from the map by loading the 
drawmap URL in a separate browser window.
Check in the apache error logs to see if there's any error messages.
Send to the list ( chameleon at lists.maptools.org ) your symbol and layer 
definition.
