2004 has introduced many new and exciting changes to DM Solutions Group. Since our last newsletter, weve started to offer training courses; continued to develop MapServer, Chameleon, and MapLab; launched several new projects including some that give back to our community; and moved into a new office! In addition to all this activity, the company has been growing thanks to our recent baby boom. Congratulations to all the new parents and their families.

DM Solutions is the title sponsor for the Open Source GIS Conference 2004 and Second Annual MapServer User Meeting

Key projects for DM Solutions Group

Prototype Integrated Ocean Observation System (IOOS) for the U.S. oceanographic communitysponsored by the Southeastern University Research Association (SURA)

DM Solutions Group was awarded a contract with SURA to support the U.S. oceanographic community’s implementation of a distributed model of data sharing based on OGC specifications. To date, DM Solutions’ staff has assisted a number of individual stakeholders to publish data to the OGC standards. Staff members have also developed a real-time Chameleon application that shows up-to-the-hour sea surface temperatures and wind speeds from providers across America.

You can see an initial demonstration of this application [click here].

SURA is also funding DM Solutions Group to significantly enhance MapServer. These enhancements include raster queries, temporal support, and remote classification of imagery data. Thanks to SURA, these enhancements will benefit the oceanographic community and the broader MapServer community alike.

DM Solutions expanding work with community groups

As part of DM Solutions Group’s commitment to enable local communities through open source technologies, the company recently started to work with community groups in the Ottawa area.

For instance, this winter, DM Solutions partnered with the Centre for Sustainable Watersheds to develop the Watersheds InfoXchange (WIX). This GIS web-enabled platform will allow community groups to enter and manage monitoring data remotely via the Internet and view the data relative to data from other stakeholders in their watershed.

For more information on WIX, please visit the project website [click here].

DM Solutions Group also began working with the La Peche GIS Society to develop local capacity to manage its GIS assets in the community of Wakefield, Quebec.

For information on the La Peche GIS Society, please visit the website [click here].

DM Solutions technology helps Environment Canada develop the Canadian Information System for the Environment

DM Solutions Group has also worked with Environment Canada to further develop the Canadian Information System for the Environment (CISE). Environment Canada funded DM Solutions to implement direct support for database point data in MapServer, enabling numerous datasets to be published to Open GIS Consortium standards without converting this data to traditional GIS formats. This achievement has resulted in users quickly adopting the data-sharing standards within CISE.

DM Solutions Group has also been working with Environment Canada to develop a number of web applications to view the datasets published to these specifications.

These key improvements to MapServer will be available to the community in the next release of MapServer, which is expected in the coming weeks. Thank you Environment Canada for your contribution!

For more information on CISE, [click here].

Open source product news

MapServer 4.2

A beta release of MapServer is currently available, and a full release is expected soon. DM Solutions Group has enhanced the software substantially. Improvements include:

Support for new OGC specifications: styled layer descriptors (SLD) and filter encoding (with support from GeoConnections and partners)
Raster queries, 24-bit image classification, and raster SLDs (with support from SURA)
On-the-fly point mapping from non-spatial data formats (with support from Environment Canada)

For information on DM Solutions Group’s involvement with the MapServer project, please go to http://www.dmsolutions.ca/techserv/mapserver.html.

Chameleon 1.99 (technology release)

Chameleon 1.99 is scheduled for release in time for the Second Annual MapServer User Meeting and OSGIS 2004 in June. We’ve significantly changed Chameleon’s architecture since the initial version, optimizing product performance and stability. The many new features include widget packages to simplify Chameleon’s administration and improved documentation. Based on MapServer and PHP technology, Chameleon reduces the technical skills and time required to create highly customizable web-based mapping applications.

or visit the project home on MapTools [click here].
