Thanks for weighing in on this Nicolas.  

Nicolas and I had used this process on an autorun Windows CD with Mapserver a 
while ago and it worked like a charm, now I'm glad to give it a try on linux.

On a related topic, note that the above address also has a set of 
static-linked Mapserver binaries (for Win32).
