Just thinking about the sorts of stuff I do pretty regularly with GIS.

gv/ghostscript & image magick are very frequently used. less common, but I also
use gifmerge for simple animations to show time series of maps. Also the GIMP
for image manipulation, tho I tend to script standard stuff with image magick.


What are your opinions regarding including such apps? 

Some sort of image manipulation is pretty useful in a GIS suite, but not core
GIS, & they tend to be pretty well supplied with most distro's anyway.
