[FWTools] Is FWTools the right one for the job?

I'm just starting to get into GIS and so I'm not sure if the utilities
in FWTools can do what I want.

I have a bunch of shapefiles with associated prj files, and I'd like
to convert the data in them to coordinates that Google Maps can use. 
Apparently they are in NAD83 but I haven't been able to find out what
Google Maps wants.

I have a bunch of files, so ideally I'd be able to write a script to
handle all of this.

Any pointers would be appreciated.
