[FWTools] How to

I'm struggling a little here...  I am trying to convert shapefiles
(polygons, nonoverlapping with no important dbf fields, representing
presence/absence of species) into a stack of single (python) binary arrays)
For now I have 9800 of these that I need really fast access to, and postgres
is not even close- it takes about 3600 seconds to search the whole stack at
a given point in postgres, even when optimized in every way I can think of).
I have plenty of memory to hold the entire array at the scale and resolution
I am planning on using...
