One additional note, this issue with MySQL driver not opening
datastore for update by default has been fixed:

http://bugzilla.remotesensing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1325

The fixed version is available in GDAL CVS, so you may
expect in future GDAL and FWTools releases the -update option
won't be required.
