[FWTools] geotiff statistics

Is there a way to include/generate statistics for a floating point dem
dataset in geotiff format (.aux file?).  I want to get around setting
the min and max values for the tifs when using  ArcGIS.  I know that
you can use the -co STATISTICS=YES when generating Erdas .img files,
is there something similar for geotiffs?
