Import the .hgt (its a .bil) into any  COTS RS/GIS package's native 
format. If its 3-arc SRTM3, line/samples is 1201*1201, 3602*3602 for 
1-arc, no data value = -32768, xdim, ydim = 0.000833333 (3-arc), 
filename references lower left coordinate value i.e. N42W079.hgt. Files 
are 1deg by 1deg. From there, export to 16S GEOTIFF. Byte order is 
motorolla. swap bytes on windows side.
