[Geotiff] Processing Elevation data in Geotiff

Hi Chandrakant,

Ben Discoe of the http://vterrain.org/ has a lot of experience with DEMs 
and geotiffs and he, or the vterrain mailing list, is generally pretty 
free with assistance.

In my experience with 16bit dem-as-tiff's (as a user not a programmer) 
the first 8 bits stores the factor, and the second the multiplier. So 
you multiply the first by the second to arrive at your actual elevation. 
  This gives a possible elevation range of 0 - 65,536. I don't know if 
this how yours is stored. but maybe that helps(?)
