[Geotiff] Orthophoto in Fathoms?

I cannot re-create this error in the current version of IMAGINE (9.1).

The TIFF data created in the error example Chris documents below was
using an olde software. Note the date of the IMAGINE information states
"Copyright 1991 - 2001 by ERDAS, Inc." I vaguely remember a problem with
Fathoms being some kind of default in the TIFF creation in about IMAGINE
8.5, and a fix taking care of the problem before 8.6 was released.

At any rate, the error does not exist today. A file created with IMAGINE
9.1 will state: "Copyright 1991 - 2006 by Leica Geosystems Geospatial
Imaging, LLC."

As for ESRI, the old versions only read the TIFF World File and not the
GeoTIFF tags. I believe AV 3.3 was the first COT software ESRI made that
supported GeoTIFF. (Please correct me where needed folks.)

Moments after I hit send, the user sent me the listgeo dump. Fate is
so predictable.

Here it is. Interesting parts are:

ProjLinearUnitsGeoKey (Short,1): Linear_Fathom

"Units = other" in the GTCitationGeoKey (which nobody tries to parse,
AFAIK)

Projection Linear Units: 9014/(unknown) (1.000000m)

The corner coordinate values are correct for the area, if interpreted
as meters.

I did some Googling, and found much discussion about different
programs handling (or

not) these fields and it seems like maybe ESRI perhaps incorrectly
ignores this field

entirely, and therefore is (wrongly) immune to this problem caused by
Imagine writing

wacky units.

I'm still not sure why Imagine got it in its head to use Fathoms
though.
