I like both thoughts.

I'm dreaming:
1) to use the script to include code in the header.
2) a php "proxy" that cut away white spaces and CR chars (as you already did).
3) passing the js file url to the onLoad phase. es: myKaLegend = 
myKaMap.loadWidget('kaLegend','js_dir/jsfile.js','legend',otherParams) 


I think there are many combined improvements acting this way.
