it uses MapServer (http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu) to generate map images. 
  The client side code is completely independent of the MapServer but no 
other code exists to hook it up to other types of back-end services

MapServer can be configured to draw maps from a wide variety of spatial 
database, vector and raster formats, see the MapServer site for details.
