David, have you seen my script

There is a sample page in http://sistel.dyndns.info/ka-map/indext.html

The script loads an XML document from the server, as you want. You can
show images, labels and bullets, as well as arbitrary HTML.
In my example the XML is loaded evry 20 seconds, but you can load it
only once. The link on icons is not yet implemented, but is in my TODO
list.
