Steve,

For Safari, enable the debug menu so you see exceptions and have a console log:

There's also a DOM and CSS inspector: http://webkit.org/blog/?p=41
and a promising but green debugger called drosera
(http://webkit.org/blog/?p=61) available in nightly builds of webkit.

For IE 5.5, I'm with Chris.
