Jeff, I'm sure your PHP can strongly been tuned up.
pay attention to memory limits and so on.
even apache can be optimized to allow better performances with multiple 
contemporary calls.

if you want to use a script that works with the full ammount of tile and 
wget you can use the precache_wget.php file
