except for the part about leaving the image at the new location,  
which is something that bugs me in singleTile mode and I am hoping to  
fix it "Real Soon Now (tm)".

Serious, Andreas, you should consider using OpenLayers with a  
MapServer layer type and set singleTile to true - this will give you  
excellent functionality connecting directly to mapserver cgi with not  
a lot of overhead (if you build a minimal profile of OpenLayers).
