Hello,
Yes you need to create a point layer in the mapfile for your new
shapefile. The maplab tutorial covers how to add a point layer through
MapEdit (maplab-2.2.1\htdocs\tutorial\maplab_tutorial.html section
"Adding Layer Objects with Vector Data").
If you want to see an example layer for a point shapefile open the
tutorial mapfile in a text editor (maplab-2.2.1\tutorial\tutorial.map
->"popplace" layer).
To avoid any projection issues, the easiest way is to make a new
mapfile, set the EXTENT to your shapefile's extents, and add your point
layer.
To get your shapefile's extent value you can use the ogrinfo utility,
that comes with MS4W and FWTools (both available on maptools.org).
Good luck.
