Auto is what I use with streets. Also important to note is the ANGLE auto
only works when using Truetype font labels. Getting those working takes a
bit of work.

Subject: [mapserver-users] [MAPSERVER-USERS] Line Annotations

Happy Friday List,
Thanks to all the helpful responses to my last email, I'm up and
running. I'm now trying to tweak everything up and can't seem to find the
correct command to have annotations place themselves along the street
centerlines. Is there other commands to go with ANGLE besides auto that
might do the trick?
Thanks
John
