The preferred/coolest one is PostGIS:
http://postgis.refractions.net
It's the spatial extension to PostgreSQL.
MapServer can also support Oracle Spatial and SDE ...
If neither of those is acceptable to you, you can use mapscript and any
database system supported by the language you use (Perl, PHP, Python) ...
