Hi,

I tried this but it cannot connect to any WMS for capabilities, giving me a
Host not found error.  The hosts I'm trying indeed exist.

there's a free arcgis wms-extension on this site (unfortunally it is in
german):
http://www.conterra.de/service/download/wms/index.asp
with this tool you can add some wms layers/servers to your arcmap.
