GDAL 1.2.0 works great for us.

The only problem may be the new libtool-based build system that may not 
have been tested on all the esoteric platforms (for instance AIX didn't 
work very smoothly). However if you run into problems then you can use 
the --without-libtool configure switch (and report the problems you 
found to the GDAL list).
