Hi Steven:
I'm in the neighbourhood also -- in Richmond. Are there any other local
Vancouver (lower mainland BC) folk on the list? Enough to get a small group
together -- say sometime in the next couple of months? -- mishtu

Subject: [Mapserver-west] Intro
Hello,
I've just joined in as well. As an intro, I'm a faculty member at Humboldt
State University. I did my PhD work at Minnesota in the early days of
Mapserver with Steve Lime and others so from a time standpoint I've been
around this game from the beginning (a decade or so).
Before anyone gets the impression that means I know everything about MS,
no! I see myself as more of a facilitator of MS and associated application
platforms. I'm not much of a programmer which is why I find folks to
collaborate with on that end (Doug, Gregor and Matt have all introduced
themselves already and I guess you could say its my fault they're all into
MS at this point).
What I will say is that we've done a good amount of development both at
the University and in collaboration with HostGIS over the last 7 years or
so. I tend to find ways to sell the idea of spatial data as part of almost
every project we undertake and we have several that have already been
mentioned here by my colleagues.
I'm very interested in growing the collaborations with anyone out there
who is interested in a University partner (including the folks down in
Arizona who might want to channel their program into something transferrable
with a GIS program at a larger University).
Humboldt has a respected GIS program and draws in folks from all across
the country (which is why students like Matt come from the east coast, right
Matt!??) I'm very interested in continuing to find ways to make all of this
useful to people out there in real situations and without saddling them with
the costs of expensive commercial software systems. There's nothing better
than being able to promote a system where we can put all of the funding into
actual development and nothing into the cost of software licences, etc.
Finally I'll mention that I'm up here in Vancouver for a while, and would
be happy to meet any of you who are in the neighborhood! (I know you're
lurking out there). At some point I'd also like to see us west coasters get
together to host a Mapserver Conference on this side of the continent. (it's
our turn after all) and I'd be more than happy to offer HSU as a potential
site.
Steve
