  There were two great presentations at last years conference that might
help out. Go to http://www.omsug.ca/osgis2004/proceedings.html
and look for these topics:

Dave McIlhagga - Intro to Open Source GIS
Paul Ramsey - A Brief Survey of Open Source GIS Software 

The first focuses more on the business model behind open source and the
second  on an inventory of open source GIS projects. Between these two,
you should find something useful.
