[Mapserver-west] Steve Lime is coming to town...

Aaron,

I'm going to be there, presenting as part of the Google Earth session on
Tuesday. However, I'm flying in/out and have to leave before the
MapServer session on Wednesday. Perhaps the group could snatch a table
(tables) for the lunch also, or coordinate a meet-up during the vendor
social on Tue PM?

Jason

Subject: [Mapserver-west] Steve Lime is coming to town...

Hola folks,

Well, Steve is coming to town April 18th-19th for the URISA GIS in
Action Conference to be held at the Vancouver Convention Center & Hilton
Hotel Vancouver, WA. We have his captive attention for 2 days... that's
right, the father of Mapserver himself. I have emailed back and forth
with him and he is arriving Tuesday morning and leaving Thursday
morning. He has tentative plans to go out to dinner with the organizers
of the conference on Tuesday evening and speak at the lunch on day two.
Besides that his schedule is pretty open and he is interested in meeting
people and getting some good seafood. So I propose the following (I am
open to other alternatives as well, this is just to get the ball
rolling):

1) We co-opt the last hour of the second day to hold a
"Mapserver-West/OSGeo User Group" meeting for all of those that can make
it. This will be right after the lunch talk from Steve and the
Mapserver session in the afternoon. I will talk with Bibiana about
getting a room from 4-5pm on Wednesday the 19th (this will coincide with
the URISA business meeting at the end of the day). I think this would
be a great opportunity for everyone to swap business cards, talk about
projects, and put names to faces. A strong Mapserver/OSGIS community is
built around this type of meeting opportunity.

2) We all take Steve out for some good food and beer in Portland after
we wrap up on Wednesday. I think an early dinner around 5:30-6pm would
allow some of those traveling in from out of town to still have a quick
bite and get on the road after traffic dies down. The rest of us will
plan to take Steve out for a good time at some of the local Breweries
after dinner.

That is about it. I am anxious to meet up with all of the OS junkies
out there that can be in the Portland/Vancouver area for the conference,
and what better way than to gather in the presence of Steve Lime. Let
me know what you think and I will send out some more details as things
take shape.

Please forward me names and emails of others that you think might be
interested in this so I can add them to future emails, or feel free to
forward this to them and have them contact me directly.

Aaron
