Hi, you're right, MS4W is intended for people to speed up installation on Windows. Or at least that is one of the reasons. See http://www.maptools.org/ms4w/index.phtml (section target audience) for the complete story. What I do is setup a Mapserver CGI as a WMS server, and then use Chameleon (also on www.maptools.org) to build my web mapping applications. Chameleon 1.1 is available as a MS4W package. So at least you need to get familiar with displaying data with the Mapserver CGI, that's the best start. You can do this by first learning the MAP format.
