You're right - but even the latest postgis installation includes 900913 and 
nevertheless it is usefull for OSM, Google, Bing, ...

at a guess, because it is not an official EPSG projection...

I think the 900913 is a clever way of trying to spell google with numbers.

you should / could / might want to check out 
http://www.spatialreference.org/ or http://www.epsg.org/
