I think It might be a bug. It certainly is documented as being part of 
the possiblities (http://mapserver.org/ogc/mapscript.html). maybe also 
specify what version of MapServer and which scripting language you are 
using. If you are using the 6.0-betaxx, have you tried the same thing on 
the 5.6.x versions?
