If I remember correctly, there are 3 Makefile to update on Linux:

gd-1.8.4/Makefile
gdchart2/GNUmakefile
owtchart/GNUmakefile

In each one, there are comments relating to enabling PNG (either 
HAVE_PNG or HAVE_LIBPNG).

Yes, I know, this lib desperately needs a configure script to automate 
all that...
