The PROJ.4 distributed from remotesensing.org installs a proj_def.dat
file containing:

<general>
ellps=WGS84
<>
<aea> # Conterminous U.S. map
lat_1=29.5
lat_2=45.5
<>
<lcc> # Conterminous U.S. map
lat_1=33
lat_2=45
<>
<lagrng>
W=2
<>

So, for the "aea" projection there are defaults lat_1 and lat_2 values.
I don't think I added them myself, so I imagine they come from earlier
versions distributed by Gerald, but I don't know that for a fact.  Anyways,
no longer is there a big mystery where the defaults were coming from.
