+datum=potsdam is nothing else, only better human-readable.

It applies for all ellipsoids that are not identically located to the 
standard WGS84 ellipsoid. It describes the offset from an ellipsoids 
center to that of WGS84 ellipsoid: the first three in coordinate axis 
X,Y,Z (from the earths center), the next three rotations around those 
axis, and the 7th a scale parameter.
