I've just took the latest trunk, and install the TinyOWS demo datas  
(make install-demo)
and then launch QGIS on France layer. And i'm able to insert or update  
features.

If i grab manually the layer:
http://127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/tinyows?SERVICE=WFS&VERSION=1.1.0&REQUEST=GetFeature&Typename=world

It's looks like:
<gml:featureMember>
   <tows:world gml:id="world.1">
   <gml:name>Afghanistan</gml:name>
   <tows:gmi_cntry>AFG</tows:gmi_cntry>
   <tows:region>Asia</tows:region>
   ...


It's also works the same on world layer.
I use QGIS 1.6 Mac


Could you check on your server with demos data too ?
