I use orthophotos as well in my projects. I allways use the gdal_translate and gdaladdo functions to prepare the images. So i get zoomfactor independent a good picture in a reasonable response time. Usually i have several pictures for one orthophoto layer. So i put them with the gdaltindex function together.

Hi,
the performances of a project of mine have been dramatically decreased after
applying new ajax feature about displaying an orthophoto (.Tiff about 150
Megabyte): in previous version the response timing was about 7 second
(already a lot of time) but becouse the image was loaded into different
bursts the delay was not too heavy, now the same image takes 25 seconds,
during this time the page is steady and this is annoying. 
Is there a way in order to load a very heavy layer such as an orthophoto in
few time?  is there the possibility to set that layer so it goes beyond ajax
function ? Can I change the format ?
any idea is well accepted .
