Hello,

The presentation on Mapfish (called in old times cartoweb 4) in 2007 is the
answer.
http://2007.foss4g.org/presentations/viewattachment.php?attachment_id=159

So, Cartoweb 3.x only maintained and I've never heard about a cartoweb 3.6
version

Mapfish is more and more developped, in particular, with the OSGEO
incubation process <http://www.osgeo.org/node/973> and the
PSC<http://www.mapfish.org/trac/mapfish/wiki/Community/PSC/MapFishProjectSteeringCommittee>
.
It means Mapfish will be more and more sustained by a community, differents
societies and not only CampToCamp, unlike Cartoweb before.

It depends of your goal, at the end. In your case, it seems very useful
using cartoweb to learn Mapserver part like configuring mapfile. The fact
that the application is old don't mean it will not be a good answer for
"normal use". An example on the http://www.ratp.fr/ website to find your
way.

Regards
