Based on my little understanding of this bug, only from talking with Julien
earlier about this, it seems to me that what you suggest would mean that 3
releases (2.2.x, 2.4.0 and post-2.4) would have 3 different function calls. It's
already bad to break compatibility by changing the function prototype once,
don't even mention doing it twice.

Last minute changes before a release give you very bad karma too... so you have
a tough choice to make... but my advice goes against releasing a broken
interface that you know you are going to break again in the next release.
