Hi Rene,

If I understand your requirements correctly I think you can use the 
applyBoundingBox javascript function.  This function can be seen in 
BoundingBoxPopup.widget.php on line 229.  Essentially, you pass the bbox 
coords to the function and it handles submitting and zooming.
