[Chameleon] [UNCLASSIFIED]Samples hanging

Hi all,
 
I have been trying to get the samples to work with the Chameleon 2.2 build (as referenced from samples/htdocs/index.html, i.e.sample_basic_plainbuttons.phtml);  all the widgets/buttons appear, though the page appears to hang when presenting the 'Loading Image. Please wait' image (note also the the reference image is also absent).  There doesn't appear to be any image created in the /tmp directory (am quite sure that the perms are ok to write - have got the button imagery writing to thew same location).  Note that I have tested the same mapfile using mapscript/mapserver on the same server and am presented with a map without issue.
 
I have checked the archives with no success. There are no error messages in the apache log, and nothing is written to screen - am at a loss.  Grateful for any suggestions ?
 
Sorry, almost forgot - I am working on Suse 9, Apache 2, PHP4.4.0, with Mapserver 4.6.
