[Chameleon] How to set active layer with XMLThemeLegend

I'm using the XMLThemeLegend widget for my main legend on my map. I added a 
second popup html legend but when I try to set a layer as the active layer 
for expresionbuilder, etc., I just get an error.
 Is there a way to define a wms/wfs as the active layer (again, for 
expressionbuilder, etc.) while using a XMLThemeLegend.
