[Chameleon] Php magic_quotes_qpc setting

I have a question regarding the PHP magic_quotes_qpc setting in the
php.ini file. By default with the ms4w release, the magic_quotes are set
to ON. 
I've noticed some problems with this when certain things need to be
escaped in my own scripts, and also a problem in the Locate widget, when
typing in something like St. John's.

So my question is:
Is it safe to turn the magic_quotes_qpc setting to OFF? Will this affect
Chameleon/CWC2 negatively in other ways?
