[FWTools] Installing FWtools 1.0.7 on Ubuntu 6.06

G'day,
I have been trying to install 1.0.7 on Ubuntu 6.06 (dapper drake) in virtual
PC 2004, but can't get past the final step. I have run the install script
and am up to the "add bin_safe to path" bit. I think I have to add something
to my ~/.bash_profile, based on the linux install intructions here:
http://fwtools.maptools.org/linux-main.html

I basically just need someone to tell me what to do, where and how. I am
pretty new to linux so please give me far too much detail, I don't even know
obvious things yet.
