[FWTools] gdalwarp failing when executing two copies simultaneously

I am shelling out to execute gdalwarp from Java code. Running one instance of
gdalwarp seems ok. If I run two threads (each of which shells out to execute
one instance EACH of gdalwarp) both instances fail with the following error:

ERROR1: Translating source or target SRS failed: EPSG:4326

EPSG:4326 is just WGS84 - clearly that is in the database, and in face the
same thing when running one thread (or one instance of gdalwarp) works
great.

Any ideas?
