[FWTools] Generate GTiff from DTED

HI 
I am trying to generate GTiff from a DTED file , but all i get is a black
image.

I use gdal_translate.exe -of Gtiff sample.dt1 out.tif

What am i doing wrong? and is it possible to add colours to the Gtiff when
the Gtiff is compiled?
I am working on a windowsXP machine Sp2 , FWTools 1.3.5
