Theuns,

How are you inspecting the Geotiff to determine that it is black?  It will
presumably be a 16bit raster file which many tiff viewers will not display
in any convenient way.  Try viewing the GeoTIFF with OpenEV.

In answer to your second question - no - there is not convenient way to
apply a color table to the elevation data with GDAL commandline utilities.
This might be better done in another environment like GRASS.
