[FWTools] Install PIL into FWTools?

Is it possible to install PIL into FWTools somehow?  I've gotten Tilecache
to work with the Python and MapServer versions that come with FWTools 2.0.6,
but I'd like to add PIL and take advantage of the metatiling option in
TileCache.

Actually, what I'd really like to do is rewrite the tilecutting portion in
TileCache to use the gdal tools to cut the metatile, but that's for later.
