[FWTools] BifTIFF on Windows and Linux

Hi - I am trying to digitize polygons on large (>8GB) images and OpenEV seems
to be one of the only open source options. GRASS will do it but I would need
to compile it from source and also deal with importing and exporting between
the GRASS format and GeoTIFF which is very time consuming.
I have FWTools installed on my Windows (version 2.2.0) and Ubuntu (version 2.0.6)
computers. I was able to import a BigTIFF file output from OSSIM on my Windows
setup but I couldn't read the resulting file on my Ubuntu setup (ikonos_792_ossim_1.tif
is neither a file or directory, Geoconcept access failed.) . I also couldn't
import the BigTIFF file output from OSSIM using Ubuntu (Unable to open FILE
for import). I tried using the -h switch but that didn't make a difference.
Can someone tell me why I can read the BigTIFF file on my Windows setup but
not on Ubuntu? What to do?
Thanks,
Ned
