Thanks for noticing ! I've just fixed the OGR PG driver doc to 
mention 'password' and not passwd. I can't understand why you wouldn't get 
the same behaviour in your own code and with ogr2ogr. Both are using the same 
code path as far as connecting to the database is concerned.
